Strengthening violence prevention against children: Experts make progress on comprehensive sexuality education

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Experts on the Prevention of Violence (ENF-VAE) held its fifth meeting in Strasbourg on 4-5 June 2025 to examine the draft recommendation on age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education to strengthen responses for inter alia preventing and combating violence against children.

Building on the feedback received during the successful spring 2025 stakeholder consultation, the Committee agreed on the content of a revised version of the recommendation and will pursue its work on developing the Explanatory memorandum.

The Committee also reviewed a report summarising  consultations with children and young people aimed at informing the draft recommendation on age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education.  According to the report, children shall have access to reliable, age-appropriate sources of information, as well as an active pedagogical approach delivered by competent and well-trained professionals.

Furthermore, the Committee elected Marjo Malja (Finland) as Chair and Viktoria Sebhelyi (Hungary) as its Vice-Chair for a first one-year term. The next meeting of the Committee will be held in Strasbourg on 7-8 October 2025.

Meeting report will be available on ENF-VAE's website soon.
