Voltar Training seminars for journalists working in conflict areas and on high-risk topics

In October 2024, the Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with the Italian Federation of the Press and the Italian Journalists Association and the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, organized a training course for the safety of journalists working in conflict areas. The course was aimed at all journalists who are called upon to work in complex scenarios that require an ever-increasing level of professionalism and preparation. The event included several theoretical and practical sessions. A lecture by the Italian Red Cross on "International Humanitarian Law and Guarantees for Journalists in crisis scenarios" was also part of the program. The course lasted two weeks and was attended by 25 participants.

A further training event focused on the safety of journalists was held in Naples on October 9 and 10, 2024. This was organized by Balkans Caucasus Transeurope Observatory (OBCT), EFJ (European Federation of Journalists), the Campania United Union of Journalists (Sindacato Unitario Giornalisti Campania - SUGC) and the Italian National Federation of Press. The seminar addressed the specific needs of journalists who cover Italian organized crime. Training topics included principles of fieldwork planning, risk mitigation, physical protection as well as cybersecurity.
