The Portuguese Government has officially adopted its own National Action Plan in March 2025. The document contains measures intended to safeguard the safety and security of journalists, from their physical protection in war and other open armed conflict scenarios, treats posed by crime agents, rioting in demonstrations and large sport events to the cyber defence of their work, giving a large importance to their relationship and cooperation with law enforcement agencies and even the military. The plan also foresees awareness-raising campaigns aimed at either the public or at the journalists themselves stressing out the role of the media in a free society and the need to create a safer environment for its professionals to fulfil this mission. In this regard, it’s worth mentioning also that in Portugal journalists benefit from elevated levels of protection when it comes to labour and social security rights.
