The Phoeniciens’ Route : XVI EuroMediterranean Dialogue on the Phoenicians' Route

On 19-20 October, the Phoeniciens’ Route, Cultural Route of the Council of Europe certified in 2023 organised the XVI EuroMediterranean Dialogue on the Phoenicians' Route and its 2023 International General Assembly.

The event, with conferences, exhibitions, meetings, roundtables, guided tours, provided an opportunity to delve into the rich cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region. Participants convened to connect and discuss sustainable cultural and tourism development centered around the Phoenician civilization.

The meeting also marked the 20th Anniversary of the recognition of the Phoenicians' Route as Cultural Route of the Council of Europe (2003-2023), in the presence of international delegations and representatives of its 15 countries and other Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Routes.

Mr Stefano DOMINIONI, Executive Secretary of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA) gave a speech on Sardinia as one of the symbols of the great Phoenician civilization and on the fact that the Phoenicians' Route has been certified by the Council of Europe to give value to our shared history with exchanges, peaceful coexistence, participation, dialogue, and the rediscovery of our traditions.

Certified by the Council of Europe in 2003, the Phoenicians’ Route refers to the connection of the major nautical routes used by the Phoenicians, since the 12th century BC, as essential routes for trade and cultural communication in the Mediterranean. The route passes through all the Mediterranean countries, crossing 14 EPA member States, and aims to foster Mediterranean intercultural dialogue, sharing the values of the Council of Europe, especially human rights and democracy.
