Descrizione: Administrative body of the Department of Ariège (Occitanie).
The Niaux Cave contains rock art of the greatest importance from 13,500 years ago. The area that can be visited is its “Black Room”, the chamber with most of the animal figures (http://www.prehistour.eu/carp-guide/niaux-cave). The cave of La Vache is one of the richest Magdalenian sites in the Pyrenees (c.a. 14,000 years ago), with a major collection of engraved and sculpted objects (http://www.prehistour.eu/carp-guide/la-vache-cave). The Cave of Bédeilhac contains deposits as well as the paintings, engravings and sculptures from middle and late Magdalenian (http://www.prehistour.eu/carp-guide/bedeilhac-cave). The Cave of Mas-d’Azil can’t be visited in its areas with rock art, yet the sites of prehistoric occupation are accessibile (http://www.prehistour.eu/carp-guide/mas-d039azil-cave).
The Prehistoric Park of Tarascon-sur-Ariège (est. in 1994 by the General Council of Ariège Department) is devoted to prehistoric rock art under many aspects, consisting of a museum space for exhibitions, with reproductions of paintings and objects from local caves, and outdoor animation workshops (http://www.prehistour.eu/carp-guide/tarascon-sur-ariege-prehistory-park).
