Council of Europe Days:
telling the Council of Europe’s story

People across the Council of Europe’s 46 member states live in greater safety, security and dignity because their governments protect their human rights.  Most of them would struggle to list all of their rights as laid out in the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter.  They might also not know about the various conventions that we have in place covering everything from the prevention of torture, to tackling human trafficking, to combating violence against women and domestic violence.

Germany marks 75 years in the Council of Europe, launches Democracy Ambassadors

Democracy in Europe faces mounting pressure. In Berlin, Germany marked 75 years of membership in the Council of Europe with an Anniversary Conference that looked back on decades of cooperation while setting out ideas to safeguard democratic values for the future.

The event brought together political leaders, academics and civil society voices to debate the state of freedom and democracy, and to raise the Council of Europe’s visibility at a critical moment for the Organisation.

Marking the anniversary, seven “Democracy Ambassadors” were appointed from civil society. Their work will spotlight key Council of Europe priorities, including democracy, women’s rights, youth participation and the fight against corruption.

“These appointments are a first step in preparing a ‘Berlin declaration on Democracy’ which can be considered as a German contribution to the New Pact on Democracy, initiated by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe,” said Ambassador Heike Thiele, Permanent Representative of Germany to the Council of Europe. “By these Ambassadors, we count on a strong networking of Council of Europe representatives with the German civil society,” Ambassador Thiele added.

The conference was co-hosted by the Council of Europe and Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, with support from the European Movement Germany, under the theme “Strengthening Networks for Democracy – 75 Years of Germany in the Council of Europe.”

 Telling the story

We flourish when we have the freedom to be who we are, when we are able to express ourselves freely whilst respecting the dignity of others, when we are able to make a contribution to the societies in which we live, and when we are respected for our differences.

The Council of Europe, Europe's Human Rights Guardian is an intergovernmental organisation with 46 member states. It promotes and develops our human rights at the pan-European level.

The member states of the Council of Europe have a role in raising awareness of the human rights standards and work of the Council of Europe among their populations. These standards and the work of the Council of Europe have a huge impact on the lives of people living in Europe.
