Webinar on “Interculturalism and Anti-Racism in Cities: From Theory to Practice”

The ICC programme is organising with the Laboratory for Research on Intercultural Relations (LABRRI) at the University of Montreal the second international webinar on “Interculturalism and Anti-Racism in Cities: From Theory to Practice”. The webinar will take place on 20 May 2021, at 9-11 am EST (Canada), 3-5 pm CET (France).

Following the success of the first webinar on “Interculturalism and Anti-Racism in Cities", held on 26 February, where the theoretical implications of the intercultural and the anti-racism approach were discussed, this second edition will continue the dialogue on more practical grounds.

In cities across the world, proponents of interculturalism (an approach focused on equality, diversity and positive interactions) and anti-racism (an approach more concerned with social and racial discrimination and redressing injustice) have been active in the fight for equality and inclusion. While policy-makers and activists adhering to these two “doctrines” clearly have shared goals, the different emphasis and strategies adopted by them can prevent them for joining forces to drive systemic change.

At the theoretical or ideological level, it can be argued that the two approaches are complementary. In practice, there is a tendency to subordinate one approach to the other, without asking fundamental questions about which approach is best suited to address a particular set of issues at a particular moment in time. In particular, the modus-operandi of cooperation across these two different sensitivities and movements, is not sufficiently explored.

This webinar, which is aimed at politicians, officials and practitioners who seek to make cities more inclusive places, will address the relationship between interculturalism and anti-racism through the prism of concrete initiatives, experiences and challenges in some of the world’s most open, diverse and inclusive cities: Bradford, Montréal, Oslo, and Turin.

We look forward to seeing many of you in the webinar!
