President of the Venice Commission participates in a seminar on the Rule of Law at the Superior Council of Magistracy of Italy

On 9 June 2026, Ms Marta Cartabia, President of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, participated in a seminar on the Rule of Law at the Superior Council of Magistracy of Italy (CSM).

The seminar, co-organised by the Venice Commission and the CSM, took place in Rome, at the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

In her speech, Ms Cartabia presented the Venice Commission, its working method and international relevance, as a key consultative body for national and international institutions which functions as a catalyst for the emergence of a common constitutional heritage in Europe and beyond. She also referenced the Updated Rule of Law Checklist, its benchmarks and the new elements, focusing in particular on the renewed relevance of checks and balances and constitutional review. Ms Cartabia highlighted the major challenges related to artificial intelligence and new technologies, the role of private powers, the restoration of rule of law after democratic backsliding and the need for a reinforced civic and legal education.
