Presentation of the 2024 Annual Report of the Venice Commission and Opening of the Exhibition “A user guide to the Rule of Law”

On Wednesday 4 June, Ms Claire Bazy Malaurie, President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), presented the 2024 Annual Report of the Commission to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

This report highlights the main activities carried out in 2024, including the opinions adopted, the topics addressed, a statistical overview, and the impact of the Commission’s work in promoting the rule of law, democracy and human rights in member and observer States.

Following the presentation, an official ceremony marked the opening of the exhibition “A user guide to the Rule of Law”, held to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Venice Commission.

The exhibition, displayed in the Ante-Room of the Committee of Ministers in the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg from 4 to 6 June 2025, was the result of collaboration between the Venice Commission and the Maltese Presidency of the Committee of Ministers. The opening ceremony was attended by Mr Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Jonathan Attard, Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector of Malta, on behalf of Malta’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, and Ms Claire Bazy Malaurie.

This exhibition aims to present the principles of the rule of law in a clear and accessible way for all audiences. Through the unique illustrations of Maltese artist and illustrator Ms Nadine Theuma, the exhibition offers an enlightening perspective on the fundamental principles of the rule of law. This initiative not only celebrates the work and legacy of the Venice Commission, but also encourages a broader understanding of the rule of law as a cornerstone of democratic societies.
