Following a request from the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI) are preparing a draft Joint Opinion on the draft law “On restoring the right to an independent and impartial tribunal established by law by regulating the effects of resolutions of the National Council of the Judiciary adopted in the years 2018–2025”, for adoption at the 146th Plenary Session of the Venice Commission (6-7 March 2026).
On 8–9 January 2026, a delegation from the Venice Commission and DGI visited Warsaw, where they held meetings with the Minister of Justice, the First President and judges of the Supreme Court, members of the Sejm and Senate, the Human Rights Commissioner, and representatives from the President’s Chancellery. The delegation also met with representatives of civil society organisations and judicial associations.
