Representatives of the Venice Commission Secretariat participated in a webinar on “Ombudsperson institutions and the Rule of Law: Contributions from the Venice Principles”, organised by the Iberoamerican Federation of Ombudsperson in cooperation with the Raonador del Ciutadà (Ombudsman of Andorra).
The event gathered more than 100 participants from different Latin American countries and aimed to promote a regional reflection on how to use legislative reforms as a tool to strengthen ombudsperson institutions.
In this context, the relevance of the Venice Principles, the global standard that constitutes a structural guide for the design and reform of independent and efficient ombudsman institutions, was highlighted. The presentation of a case study on Andorra shed the light on the reform process undertaken in the country following the adoption of the Venice Commission’s Opinion on the Law on the creation and functioning of the Ombudsman in Andorra (CDL-AD(2022)033), focusing on the impact the reform had on the institutional consolidation of the Ombudsman.
