The Venice Commission and the European Court of Human Rights co-organised an event entitled “Crossed Perspectives on Access to Justice: Dialogue between the President of the European Court of Human Rights and the Venice Commission” at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, Venice, Italy, on 8 October 2026.
The roundtable brought together the President of the Venice Commission, Marta Cartabia, and the President of the Court, Mattias Guyomar, as well as members of the Venice Commission, its Director and members of its Secretariat, judges from the Court and its Deputy Registrar, lawyers from the Venice Bar Association and academics. Discussions among the participants explored the complementary roles of the Venice Commission and the European Court of Human Rights in the light of the Venice Commission's Updated Rule of Law Checklist and the Court's relevant case law. The meeting highlighted the mutually reinforcing nature of these perspectives and the importance of dialogue and synergies in consolidating the rule of law and in particular its benchmark on access to justice.
A highlight of the Symposium was the presentation of the Updated Rule of Law Checklist in Italian, and the launch of the exhibition on the Rule of Law at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista in Italian — marking two important milestones in the promotion of constitutional values.
