Secretary General calls on the Russian authorities to execute European Court of Human Rights’ judgment on Navalny case

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić made the following statement:

“Today marks the second anniversary since Alexei Navalny’s incarceration in Russia after an attempt on his life by poisoning. Since then, despite Council of Europe calls for his release without delay and in line with the relevant European Court of Human Rights judgment, he remains in prison under harsh conditions. I reiterate our Organisation’s solidarity with Alexei Navalny. He is not and shall not be   forgotten”.

“I call on the Russian authorities to execute the Court’s judgment and subsequent decisions of the Committee of Ministers related to the Navalny case without delay”.

“I also express deep concern at reports of ill-treatment and cruel detention conditions to which Alexei Navalny is subjected, with serious repercussions on his health. I urge the Russian authorities to ensure that he is immediately provided with all the appropriate medical care. I will follow developments closely”.
