Deputy Prime Minister Popsoi stresses the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to reform in its path to European integration

Addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during its spring session, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, expressed his country´s commitment to “continue deep reforms and transformation of the Moldovan society, overcome the challenges it faces and to build a prosperous European future for its people”.

“Over the past years, we have invested all our energy to clean up corruption in the justice system, to cut the influence of oligarchs in politics, economy and media. We progressed a lot and we are doing everything we can to implement all the recommendations of our partners”, he said, including those issued by the Venice Commission, MONEYVAL, GRECO, and the ad hoc group on justice reform.

Deputy Prime Minister Popsoi recalled that the Republic of Moldova is facing severe challenges, including the Russian aggression against Ukraine, which is causing important negative repercussions on the Republic of Moldova. He condemned Russia’s “barbaric aggression” of Ukraine and stressed his country’s commitment to continue supporting Ukraine, including by hosting refugees.

“All the efforts by the international community must be channelled to helping Ukraine, to continue withstanding this aggression, taking action to discourage Russia to continue this war”, he claimed. He also highlighted Moldova’s support to the Register of Damages created by the Council of Europe and to efforts to set up an international tribunal for Russia’s crimes of aggression.
