The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, has made the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Europe’s longest reigning monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On behalf of the Council of Europe, I send my heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom, one of our founding member states.

“The Queen was an inspiration to us all. We shall remember her with warmth and our utmost respect.”
