Immigration detention facilities in focus of CPT ad hoc visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) carried out an ad hoc visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 17 to 27 March 2026, focusing on conditions in social care institutions and immigration detention facilities. The delegation visited one immigration detention centre, and holding areas at Sarajevo International Airport, in order to assess treatment and living conditions in light of previous CPT recommendations. At the end of the visit, preliminary observations were shared with national and entity-level authorities, alongside discussions on ongoing concerns and areas requiring further improvement.

The Committee started its examination of the draft new standards on immigration detention, which should be adopted at the July 2026 plenary meeting.
