Ukraine’s First Parajanov Museum Opens at Kyiv International University

The ceremonial opening of a newly renovated cultural and educational center dedicated to the renowned 20th-century film director Sergei Parajanov took place on 27th May 2025 in the Ukrainian capital, hosted by Kyiv International University (KIU).

Parajanov’s work has left a profound mark on the history of cinema. His films, such as Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors and The Color of Pomegranates, are celebrated for their unique style, aesthetic richness, and deep symbolism. He masterfully conveyed the beauty of Ukrainian culture and folklore, making his works significant to the nation’s identity. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors became not only a cinematic masterpiece but also a symbol of Ukrainian spirituality, authenticity, and aesthetics that continues to inspire artists today.

As noted by Olena Ohanesian, Director of the Sergei Parajanov Museum at KIU and Head of the Armenian Society for Cultural Relations “AOKS-Ukraine,” this is not only the first Parajanov museum in Ukraine but also the first one established within a university. “This project is especially aimed at young people,” she said. “Just think of the times they’re living through — COVID, war, constant anxiety. And yet they break through like grass through asphalt. They want to be heard. And when they encounter such an artist like Parajanov,— they feel uplifted. That’s when they are able to give their very best.”

The exhibition features around 350 items, including personal belongings of the director, archival photographs, and original installations dedicated to his creative legacy.

Khachatur Khachaturian, President of KIU, emphasized the importance of opening such a cultural space: “This is not just a museum — it is a place where the spirit of a great artist comes to life. A person who could see the world through the lens of beauty, symbols, and inner light. We are incredibly proud that our university now houses a space that will preserve and pass on this unique heritage to future generations.”

The grand opening of the renovated museum was attended by cultural and artistic figures, as well as representatives of Ukraine’s national communities. The event was supported by the joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe Support for Implementing European Standards Relating to Anti-discrimination and Rights of National Minorities in Ukraine  and the Council of Europe project “Support for the Reform of the Legal Framework on National Minorities and Strengthening the Resilience of National Minorities and Roma in Ukraine” – Phase II.
