The Council of Europe, in partnership with the EU Project Pravo-Justice, held a thematic workshop in Kyiv in January dedicated to the implementation of the “Fundamental Rights” pillar of the Rule of Law Roadmap, to support Ukraine in implementing European standards on combating violence against women, as part of its EU accession efforts.
Expert Liudmyla Hrytsenko highlighted best practices from European countries, key challenges, and next steps for aligning Ukrainian legislation with international standards, namely, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention) and the Directive (EU) 2024/1385 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 May 2024 on combating violence against women and domestic violence. She stressed the importance of a gender-sensitive, victim-centred approach to address all forms of violence, including domestic and conflict-related violence.
The event brought together representatives from state authorities, international organisations, and civil society.
This workshop underscores the Council of Europe’s ongoing commitment to advancing human rights and gender equality in Ukraine.
