The Council of Europe project “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine – Phase II” continues to support the initial training of trainee prosecutors in cooperation with the Prosecutors’ Training Centre of Ukraine. This training is conducted at the request of the Prosecutors’ Training Centre of Ukraine and is foreseen by the Law of Ukraine “On the Public Prosecutor’s Office”.

The training of trainee prosecutors traditionally begins with the study of Council of Europe human rights standards, the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights, and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, which are intended to serve as the foundation for prosecutors’ future professional activities.

As part of the training, Council of Europe national consultants - Ms Yanovska, Mr Zayets, and Mr Bem - addressed issues related to the application of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the execution of its judgments, as well as key Convention standards concerning the protection of the right to life, prohibition of torture, right to liberty and security, right to a fair trial, respect for private life, and protection of property rights.

A total of 183 trainee prosecutors participated in the training.

The Council of Europe will continue to support the development of prosecutors’ professional capacity and strengthen the application of human rights standards within Ukraine’s criminal justice system.

The training was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine – Phase II”, which forms part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery, and Reconstruction” for 2023–2026.
