SASG mission to Ukraine

On December 12-14, the Special Adviser of the Secretary General for Ukraine, Régis Brillat, carried out an official mission to Ukraine.

In the framework of the visit, the SASG participated in the Conference “The Role of the Supreme Court in Protecting Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms” marking the first anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ukraine. He insisted on the positive role of the New Court, a milestone of the Reform of the Judiciary. He invited all those concerned to pursue and amplify their work towards the completion of the reform of the Judiciary in particular through the adoption of the Law on the Bar and the launching of the High Anti-corruption Court.

The SASG had working meetings with

- The Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Oleksiy Filatov,

- The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk,

- The Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legislative Support of Law Enforcement Andrii Kozhemiakin,

- The First Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Social Policy, Employment and Pension Provision Serhii Kaplin,

- The Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat Mykhaylo Tepliuk,

- The Government Commissioner for Gender Policy Kateryna Levchenko,

- The Rector of the National School of Judges of Ukraine Mykola Onischuk.

Issues of the implementation of the justice sector reform in Ukraine, along with the draft Law on amending the Law of Ukraine "On the Bar and Practice of Law", implementation of individual complaints to the Constitutional Court, current issues of legislative support for reforming the system of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, social protection and pensions of Ukrainian citizens, including the Internally Displaced Persons, Ukraine's implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, potential adoption by the Ukrainian Parliament of the draft Law "On Ukraine's, Accession to the Enlarged Partial Agreement of the Council of Europe on the Establishment of a Group on Cooperation in Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (Pompidou Group)", further steps toward ratification by Ukraine of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention), possible areas of cooperation between the National School of Judges of Ukraine and the Council of Europe on the application of the European Convention on Human Rights and the practice of the ECtHR were the key issues discussed during these meetings.

The SASG also opened the Round Table “The length of civil proceedings: analysis of the Civil Procedural Code of Ukraine in the context of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights”.
