On 26–27 May 2026, the Council of Europe Project “Rights of Veterans and Personnel of Armed Forces in Ukraine” organised two information sessions for representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to strengthen the awareness and institutional capacity of state authorities regarding international standards and Council of Europe instruments related to the protection of human rights in the armed forces and the rights of persons with disabilities. The sessions were held as part of the National Accessibility Week in Ukraine and gathered around 80 participants from both ministries.
During the sessions, participants explored key international standards on the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, including standards relevant to military personnel and veterans who acquired disabilities during service. Particular attention was paid to Council of Europe instruments and approaches aimed at ensuring equal access to rights, dignity and non-discrimination for military personnel, veterans and their family members. The sessions also highlighted the importance of integrating human rights-based and accessibility-oriented approaches into the daily work of state institutions operating within the security and defense sector.
The information sessions were organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Rights of Veterans and Personnel of Armed Forces in Ukraine”, implemented under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction” 2023–2026.
