One of the challenges of journalism is covering important and challenging for the society topics in compliance with the journalistic and ethical standards. One of these topics is social injustice and human rights violations.
To explain how media should correctly present information about people with disabilities and older persons as well as how to make the language of the media sensitive, the projects "Promoting social human rights as a key factor of sustainable democracy in Ukraine " and "EU and Council of Europe working together to support freedom of media in Ukraine” present the Manual “Coverage of Social Rights and Vulnerable Groups in the Ukrainian Media”. The authors of the publication are Yelyzaveta Kuzmenko and Oleksandra Golub, national consultants of the Council of Europe.
This manual is intended to be a guide for Ukrainian journalists who seek to challenge the stereotypes about people with disabilities and older persons and use correct language in order to stop disseminating them.
- Why is it important for journalists to cover social rights?
- What are stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination?
- How to cover the topic of peoples with disability and create content with their participation?
- What phrases and words should be used to properly cover people with disabilities in the media?
- How should media correctly present information about older persons?
The answers to these and many other questions are already available via the link.
