Training of judges on ethics and integrity in cooperation with the Judicial Academy

The training event for newly elected judges on ethics and integrity was organised in Novi Sad in cooperation with the Judicial Academy, with the support of the joint EU/CoE project “Support for the implementation of judicial reform in Serbia”. The training sessions were attended by 30 judges from the territory of the Appellate Court in Novi Sad.

As part of this training event, the participating judges were provided with presentations on the new constitutional and legal framework in Serbia, relevant European standards, opinions of the Venice Commission on judicial reform in Serbia, as well as the CCJE opinions and GRECO recommendations. The discussion evolved around the implications of the key ethical principles defined in the law, the right of judges to express their views on the current socio-political situation in Serbia, and other ethical inquiries encountered in practice. The examples used to foster dialogue were thoroughly elaborated, illustrating different approaches and certain ethical dilemmas. The role of the judicial council was also discussed, particularly in terms of its function in publicly upholding ethical principles in practice or expressing the views of judges on certain social matters.

The joint EU/CoE project “Support for the implementation of judicial reform in Serbia” will continue to support the training of newly elected judges, aiming to enhance the implementation of European standards and the exchange of knowledge and experiences within the judiciary.
