Human Rights in Focus: Lecture on Non-Refoulement at Bilkent

As part of the Council of Europe Visibility Week, Bilkent University hosted a lecture focusing on the non-refoulement principle in light of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the Turkish Constitutional Court.

The event opened with remarks by the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law. Following the welcoming address, a Rapporteur of the Constitutional Court discussed deportation and the non-refoulement principle through the lens of the Constitutional Court’s case law.

Subsequently, the Head of Türkiye Unit of the Council of Europe took the floor and delivered a presentation on the non-refoulement principle in the context of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.

At the event held with the participation of Bilkent University students many significant cases were discussed in detail. Participants found the lecture highly informative, helping to strengthen both theoretical and practical understanding of non-refoulement principle within the framework of constitutional justice.

The lecture was an important contribution to the Council of Europe Visibility Week, further raising awareness of the Council of Europe’s work in Türkiye and of the activities of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara.

The Joint Programme on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Turkish Constitutional Court is the end beneficiary of the Project.
