Schwarzenbek, lying 50 km east of Hamburg in northern Germany, has developed around a castle. Signifying its compliance with the rules of sustainable development, the town has given proof of moderation and in that sense deserves its title of “Stadt der Mitte” - town of the (happy) medium.
Schwarzenbek belongs to the “European Cities” league on the same footing as Aubenas (France), Cesenatico (Italy), Delfzijl (Netherlands), Sierre (Switzerland) and Zelzate (Belgium), which have cherished their twinning relationships since 1955.
