Back Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee publishes report on Hungary

The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) published today the report on its visit to Hungary in May / June 2003, together with the Hungarian Government's response. These documents have been made public with the agreement of the Hungarian authorities.

The continuing practice of holding remand prisoners on police premises, often for periods of several months, was one of the main reasons for the CPT's visit. Particular attention was paid to the activities provided to remand prisoners, in both police and prison establishments, and the possibilities offered to them to maintain contact with the outside world.

In their response, the Hungarian authorities highlight legislative measures to reduce the length of pre-trial detention as well as programmes for the renovation and construction of police holding facilities and prisons.

The CPT's visit report and the Hungarian authorities' response are available on the Committee's website: www.cpt.coe.int

These documents are also available in Hungarian on the Committee's website.
