The Council of Europe Office in Belgrade, supported by the Royal Netherlands Embassy, in cooperation with Serbian Constitutional Court, has started the implementation of the “Project on Support to the Constitutional Court of Serbia ” on 1 October 2008. Program activities are trainings, seminars and study visits. All of them will be focus ed on the implementation on the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, by the Constitutional Court, mainly trough institution of the constitutional appeal.

According to the Serbian Constitution, the Constitutional Court was given one of the central roles in protection of human rights. New Law on Constitutional court has established new institute - Constitutional appeal, which allows additional protection within the national legal system and secures the implementation of all rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. If used effectively, this legal remedy has the potential to significantly lower the number of individual applications against Serbia before the European Court of Human Rights.

Project will end on 30 September 2009.
