About project / Executive summary

The project Support to Freedom of Expression and Information in Serbia is a part of the continuous effort of the Council of Europe to improve media legislation in Serbia. Previous project with the European Agency for Reconstruction has been implemented in Serbia in 2001/2002.

The project started in May 2006 and it is pursued through expertises, expert meetings, round-tables, seminars, study visits and workshops with public officials and relevant professionals.

The aim of this project is to address outstanding problems faced by Serbia in its progress towards meeting Council of Europe standards concerning freedom of expression and information. A lack of sufficient awareness of these Council of Europe standards remains, notably by the authorities, media professionals and the general public. The objective of the Council of Europe’s project is therefore to promote freedom of expression and information and freedom of the media in Serbia, in line with Council of Europe standards.
