National Focal Points advance work on journalists’ safety in Luxembourg

The third meeting of the National Focal Points to the Journalists Matter Campaign gathered representatives from across Europe to discuss ongoing efforts to improve the safety of journalists and strengthen media freedom.

The meeting focused on progress made under the Campaign, particularly in developing National Action Plans, improving data collection on safety indicators, and addressing online threats. Participants also reviewed outcomes from the recent thematic conference on the prosecution of crimes against journalists, emphasizing the need to combat impunity and ensure accountability.

Discussions highlighted the importance of inclusive cooperation among authorities, media professionals, and civil society to create safer working environments. The growing risks posed by online harassment, disinformation, and digital surveillance were identified as key challenges requiring coordinated responses.

Looking ahead, the Campaign will continue to support member States through shared tools, training, and dialogue platforms. Upcoming initiatives include a dedicated training of trainers on Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) later in 2025 and the next annual conference in 2026, focusing on prevention measures.

The meeting reaffirmed the collective commitment to protecting journalists and upholding media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy.
