The Landesakademie, Academy of Teacher In-service Training, is situated 420 m above sea level in the picturesque pine-clad gorge of the Enz, a tributary of the neckar in the Black Forest. At 45 km west of Stuttgart and 35 km east of Karlsruhe, it benefits from a healthy climate and is located in the medical spa region of Bad Wildbad (Bad is German for bath, a reference to the town's status as a spa town).
In 2006, a former clinic was modernized and transformed into an optimally equipped academy. The compound consists of two buildings with 7 seminar rooms, 4 computer-rooms, 18 group- rooms, dining facilities for 140 participants, 135 guestrooms (each with a shower and toilet) and parking facilities.
About 450 in-service training courses are organised each year. This includes the training of teachers, teacher trainers and teaching staff, involved in school education in the Land of Baden-Württemberg in all kind of schools from primary up to upper secondary and in all subjects. The objective is to help participants to upgrade their professional skills in the field of education and school development. Academy hours are from Monday at 9.00 am through to Friday 5.00 pm. There are also weekend seminars. Each year, approximately 8 500 teachers are trained at the Academy and it counts about 2500 overnight stays. A seminar normally lasts for two and a half days.
Since 1978, the Landesakademie (until 2007 situated in Donaueschingen) has organized 134 European seminars for education professionals in close cooperation with the Council of Europe and hosted more than 4 000 European teachers.
