Other bilateral and regional cooperation

From the 1990's onwards, a substantial number of activities around various aspects of the reform of history teaching were organised in the former "Eastern bloc" countries.

It is not always possible to distinguish bilateral cooperation from regional cooperation, as the results of one national seminar feed into another national seminar elsewhere, into intergovernmental projects or as they sometimes lead to topical regional seminars.

Activities were organised in the framework of several successive programmes and with the support of different partners, while still retaining a coherence in view of the general aim of the Council of Europe or in view of the specific needs of the countries/regions involved.

The following chapters may seem an hybrid way of classifying the events that took place, but they will allow an overview of the amazing work that was done in the last 15 years. They will hopefully make sense for the external readers.

History teaching and South Eastern Europe

• With an overview of all countries, and in particular:
• Bosnia and Herzegovina ;
• "The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" ;
• Serbia.

Two specific regional initiatives:

• the Tbilisi Initiative (1997-2002);
• the Black Sea Initiative (1999-2004).

Joint Programme of co-operation between the European Commission and the Council of Europe to strengthen democratic stability in:
- South Caucasus;
- North Caucasus;
- Moldova;
- Ukraine

Cooperation within the Matra programme.
