Stakeholder Conference on Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights held in Turkey
(11-13 November 2009)

The Minister of National Education, Ms Nimet ÇUBUKÇU, opening the Conference

A major stakeholder conference on democratic citizenship and human rights education was held in Ankara from 11-12 November 2009 in co-operation with the Ministry of National Education and the Council of Europe. The Conference gathered some 200 participants from all sectors of education in Turkey, including the Ministry of National Education, the Board of Education, university professors, provincial authorities, teachers, students and NGO representatives.

The Minister of Education, Ms Nimet ÇUBUKÇU, opened the Conference, expressing her full support for the introduction of democratic citizenship and human rights education in Turkey. The Head of the Board of Education, Mr Merdan TUFAN also addressed the audience as did the Acting Director of Education and Languages, Ms Olöf OLAFSDOTTIR.

A Compendium of Good Practice
(2 October 2009)

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Council of Europe (CoE), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), are pleased to announce that the educational resource book “Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice” is now published.

Symposium on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education
(June 2009)

The Council of Europe Directorate of Education and Languages and the CoE Office in Skopje in cooperation with the Ministry of Education have organised a symposium on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education, followed by a seminar for elementary school teachers, which took place on 15-16 June 2009 in the premises of the EU Info Center in Skopje.

Inter-institutional meeting
(June 2009)

On 15-16 June, the fourth inter-institutional meeting on citizenship and human rights education was hosted by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Inauguration of the European Wergeland Centre
(May 2009)

On 29 May, the European Wergeland Centre was inaugurated in Oslo. The Centre is a European resource centre on education for intercultural understanding, human rights and democratic citizenship. It is a co-operation between Norway and the Council of Europe, located in Oslo.

On 9-10 October 2008, a Forum on “Civic Partnerships for Citizenship and Human Rights Education” was organised by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

The Network of Nordic EDC/HRE coordinators meets in Helsinki
(October 2009)

On 1-2 October 2009, the Network of the Nordic EDC/HRE coordinators met in Helsinki at the invitation of the Finnish National Board of Education, organised by Jorma Kauppinen, Director of General Education of the Finnish National Board of Education and by Kristina Kaihari-Salminen, Finnish EDC/HRE coordinator. The meeting discussed curriculum reforms in EDC/HRE in the Nordic countries with regard to EDC/HRE as well as teacher education. Pupils/students competences were at the heart of the discussions. Participants also shared good practices of implementing EDC/HRE in schools and visited Helsinki University Teacher Training School.
The rapporteur of the meeting was Aidan Clifford, EDC/HRE coordinator from Ireland.

SEE Network meeting
(May 2009)

The 6th South East Europe Conference on Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education was organised in Becici, Montenegro and co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and Science.  The conference provided the participants an opportunity to both network and to consider how co-operation in teacher training can be further developed in the region.

On 5-6 November 2007, a Regional European Meeting on the World Programme for Human Rights Education was organised in Strasbourg by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UNESCO and the OSCE - Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
