Conference in Ankara to step up progress in combating violence against children

23.11.2012 - How to effectively implement integrated national strategies against violence and strengthen child protection systems? How to improve accountability and responsiveness when safeguarding children’s rights and eliminating violence? These questions have been considered at a European conference on 27 and 28 November in Ankara organised by the Government of Turkey, the Council of Europe and UNICEF.

The conference brought together high-level local and national officials, ombudspersons, as well as professional networks, civil society and researchers to share practice, develop concrete initiatives and outline priorities for future work in the region, in the light of the outcome of the UN Global Progress Study on Violence against children.

UNICEF Turkey representative Ayman Abulaban, Council of Europe Committee of Ministers Thematic Coordinator for Children Anica Djamic, UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children Marta Santos Pais, Turkey’s Minister of Family and Social Policies Fatma Şahin, and Norwegian State Secretary of the Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion Ahmad Ghanizadeh opened the meeting.

The conference began 9 am on Tuesday 27 November at the Marriott Hotel (Kizilirmak Mah. Muhsin Yazicioglu Cad. No: 1 Sogutozu).
