Strasbourg ,

A conference will bring together representatives of governments, privacy NGO´s, academics and experts from all over the world to discuss the benefits and commitments of the Data Protection Convention, the challenges it faces, and the role it can play to create common rules to protect personal data at global level. The convention - the only existing international treaty in its field- has been already ratified by 48 states and accession to it by Mauritius, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia is pending. Speakers include Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy Joseph Cannataci, European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli, and Chair of the convention´s committee Jean-Philippe Walter. Prior to the conference - on 15 and 16 June - an intergovernmental committee will meet to finalise the modernisation of the convention, which will be submitted for approval by the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers later this year.
