Political Party Expert Workshop in Kyiv

On July 6-7, OSCE/ODIHR together with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Global Affairs Canada, the Agency for Legislative Initiatives (ALI), Civil Network OPORA, and the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is hosting the 4th Political Party Expert Workshop. The workshop is ongoing at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and covers issues connected to political party regulation, combining a comparative perspective of trends and challenges identified across the OSCE region in the field of political party regulation together with an in depth analysis of the Ukrainian political party legislation. The two-day event is devoted to discussing issues related to the allocation of public funding to political parties, the impact of the electoral system on political parties, the effective enforcement of the adopted legislative framework, the role of youth and new technologies, women’s and persons with disabilities’ political participation, as well as political parties at the local level.

The workshop includes presentations and remarks on international standards, good practice, and recommendations by national and international experts and implementers.

On behalf of the Venice Commission took part in the event Dr. Serhii Kalchenko, Election Expert of the Venice Commission, and Dr. Péter Paczolay Honorary President of the Venice Commission, former President of the Constitutional Court of Hungary. They spoke about the principles and standards of the Council of Europe, the experience of cooperation of Ukraine and the Venice Commission and the recent findings of the Commission concerning the Ukrainian legislation.
