7. Are there specific compensation arrangements for donations of sperm/oocytes/embryos? Yes. There is financial compensation for egg and sperm donations.

For sperm donation: age limit 18-45.

For oocyte donation: age limit 18-35.

The potential gamete donor shall be medically examined for:

1. sexually transmitted diseases, Hepatitis B, C
2. general health
3. genetic diseases.

9. Are there specific non-medical criteria for selection of gametes/embryos to be used for MAP? Yes. Choosing matching appearance of donor and future parents is possible. It is prohibited to choose the sex of the child during medically assisted procreation, except for the case of an inherited genetic disorder related to the sex.

10. Are there special measures for the prevention of consanguinity? Yes. There can be no more than three children born as a result of medically assisted procreation using gametes from a single donor, except in cases of multiple pregnancy.

11. In a homosexual couple, is a legal relationship possible between a child and the partner of the legal parent? No

19. Is there an important current debate in your country on these or related issues? Yes. There was a discussion on surrogate motherhood in Saeima (parliament). A conclusion has not yet been reached.

3. Are MAP procedures covered by the social security system? Yes. Male and female infertility is considered a disease.

4. Are there specific criteria for such coverage? Yes. Medically assisted procreation is covered for women under 40.

5. Is the financial coverage limited to a number of MAP procedures? Yes. Up to two MAP procedures are covered. Long-term storage of frozen embryos is not covered.
