Work of the CDMSI presented at the 48th meeting of the European platform of regulatory authorities

The 48th meeting of the European platform of regulatory authorities (EPRA) took place on 10-12 October in Bratislava at the invitation of the Slovak Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission (CBR).



Silvia Grundmann, Head of the Media and Internet Division at the Council of Europe presented an update on the activities of the Council of Europe Information Society Department highlighting the current work of the Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI) undertaken in two expert committees. The presentation focused on the deliverables prepared by the Committee of experts on Quality Journalism in the Digital Age (MSI-JOQ) - dealing with financial sustainability and the promotion of a favorable environment for quality journalism as well as with media literacy in the digital environment - and by the Committee of experts on Human Rights Dimensions of Automated Data Processing and Different Forms of Artificial Intelligence (MSI-AUT) - tackling, inter alia, the negative human rights impacts and manipulative powers of algorithmic processing and the question of responsibility for AI decision-making systems.



She also invited the regulators to take part in the upcoming conference “Addressing hate speech in the media: the role of regulatory authorities and the judiciary” taking place 6-7 November in Zagreb.

Bringing together 53 regulatory authorities from 47 countries, the meeting of the network of broadcasting regulators allows for fruitful exchange of information and best practices. The Council of Europe, as well as the European Commission, the European Audiovisual Observatory and the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media are standing observers of the platform.
