On 3 September 2026, the Council of Europe participated in the international conference Public Service Media in the Platform Era – Towards Public Digital Infrastructures that took place at the British Academy in London. The event brought together public service media organisations, regulators, policymakers, researchers and other experts to discuss the future of PSM in an increasingly platform-based environment.

The Council of Europe was represented by Ms Elena Brodeala, Legal Advisor in the Council of Europe’s Freedom of Expression and CDMSI Division. Discussions focused on how public service media can respond to the challenges of an increasingly platform-based digital environment, including the impact of artificial intelligence and algorithms, dependence on global technology platforms, the role of social media, control over content distribution, and opportunities for developing public-interest digital infrastructures.

The exchanges were particularly relevant to the ongoing work of the Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI) on its Practical Guide on Building Independent, Sustainable and Pluralistic Public Service Media.
