New Visitor’s Guide to Responsible Travel for the Alvar Aalto Route

The Alvar Aalto Route has published a new Visitor’s Guide to Responsible Travel, offering practical ways for travellers to make more thoughtful choices before, during and after their visits along the Route.

The Guide was produced in collaboration with Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences’ Tourism Management Programme as part of the Strength from Sustainability project funded by the Finnish Heritage Agency.

The Guide is intended for visitors planning their journey along the Route, encouraging them to practice responsible and sustainable travel. It highlights simple but meaningful actions: choosing public transport when possible, spending more time in each destination, using local services and moving respectfully within architectural sites and their surroundings. These choices help preserve the unique connection between architecture, interiors and cultural landscapes.

Across the Alvar Aalto Route network, partners contribute through everyday practices and long-term development - improving energy efficiency, strengthening recycling, maintaining built heritage and collaborating closely with local communities. Many destinations also promote seasonal and plant-based food, support local producers, enhance accessibility and advance biodiversity through practical initiatives.

While these actions may seem small on their own, together they form a strong foundation for responsible cultural tourism. This is a shared effort across the entire network and the goal is clear: to ensure that Aalto sites remain vibrant, meaningful parts of living environments for generations to come.

Explore the Guide and discover how mindful travel choices can make a lasting impact. The Guide is available in English here: Alvar Aalto Route’s guide to responsible travel and the Route’s Sustainability page can be found here: Alvar Aalto Sustainability.
