Municipal Plan for Integration of Immigrants in Lisbon

Lisbon is a city where there is room for everyone, a crossroad of cultures and people from all over the world making the urban reality so rich. If the importance of interculturalism is recognised on many levels, from job creation to demographic renewal, it also brings new challenges. In this perspective, on 15 July 2015, the officials working for Social Rights at the municipality developed and approved unanimously a Municipal Plan for Integration of Immigrants in Lisbon.

The document includes several actions to be completed until 2017. It aims at creating measures and tools for the integration of the immigrant population of the city of Lisbon with a view to fostering inclusion and generating opportunities for all while acknowledging the benefits that diversity brings to the city. The strategy includes a major analysis of the reality of diversity, as well as data entry which helped to understand how the phenomenon of immigration is evolving , what kind of people are concerned and what it brings back to Portuguese society.

Implementation of the strategy has begun. The Lisbon Immigrant Guide has been published. This instrument allows to access information useful to the integration process. The second volume of the strategy is devoted to the diagnosis of the immigrant population living in Lisbon. It was conducted by the Institute of Geography and Regional Planning (University of Lisbon) and asks questions about all those who have chosen the city of Lisbon as their own such as who they are, where they are and what they are doing.
