The Routes at the 2026 Europe Day in the Castle of Wiltz

On 10 May, the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme participated at the 2026 Europe Day in Wiltz, Luxembourg with a dedicated stand. More than 4 000 people took part in the event.

Each year, "Europe Day" pays tribute to Robert Schuman's declaration in 1950 by highlighting the European values of peace, unity, solidarity, democracy and freedom. 2026 also marked the 40th anniversary of the accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Union.

The tent of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme was present with an information stand highlighting the Cultural Routes network and activities, as well as the Council of Europe with a special emphasis on the rule of law. With a wide range of informational materials on the Cultural Routes and the Council of Europe, and an engaging quiz, the EPA/EICR Team showcased the diversity and richness of Europe’s tangible and intangible heritage and the Council of Europe’s role as a defender of human rights, the rule of law, and democracy. Visitors of all ages were particularly interested by the European flag and fascinated by the presentation of the 49 cultural routes of the programme.

70 information stands around the castle of Wiltz gave a chance visitors to discover “everyday Europe”, in rural areas and in the region of Luxembourg, highlighting initiatives that shape our daily lives. Several countries were also present to share their history and culture, many offering culinary delights.

The official ceremony took place at 12:50 PM on the main stage in the presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg followed by the European Anthem. The event closed with a preview screening of the film “Europe : La bataille des sieges” by Donato Rotunno.
