Magyar Televízió is Hungary's national public-service television. It was established pursuant to the Hungarian Parliament Act I of 1996 on radio and television broadcasting as the successor of the Hungarian Television, a state enterprise founded in 1957. The station currently broadcasts on two channels: m1, a terrestrial program, and m2, transmitted over satellite. Since the launch of commercial television in Hungary in 1997, the Hungarian Television lost its media market monopoly and it has been facing serious competition both in terms of audience figures and advertising revenues. Its primary mission, however, remains the performance of public-service functions, such as the production of programmes addressing the needs of smaller groups of a variegated Hungarian society (religious people, children, people interested in Hungarian culture and arts, minorities and Hungarians living abroad). The Religious and Church Programmes of the Hungarian Television celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2010. The television started broadcasting specialist programmes on religious themes just after the fall of the Communist regime in 1990. Now it reached an amount of more than 11.000 minutes broadcast every year. There are programmes for the eight so-called historical churches of Hungary and for 47 so-called “minority” churches. Genres vary from coverage of church news and events, children’s and youth programmes, Bible interpretation, documentary, portrait documentary and live broadcast of religious events.
