Investigative journalism in Ukraine: “We need to be louder than the propaganda”

On 22 May in Barcelona, Spain, the Prix CIRCOM Regional 2025 Gala Award Ceremony celebrated the best productions in regional public service television broadcasting across Europe. Representing Ukraine´s National Public Broadcasting Company “Suspilne”, journalist Hanna Kalaur came together with producer Olha Tatarenko to be awarded the winning entry in the category of Investigative journalism.

Hanna Kalaur underlined the importance of European support for independent media in Ukraine.

“Times are challenging for independent media. We cannot exist without support. This prize means a lot to me, to my team, and to Ukraine. When we share our investigations abroad, we send an important message: this isn’t only Putin’s war. We need to be louder than Russian propaganda. This is why this prize is important to us.”

The Investigative Journalism Prize is sponsored by the Council of Europe through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2012. The agreement aims of promoting the core values of the Council of Europe: human rights, democracy and the rule of law.  In the media field, it supports freedom, pluralism, and the independence of public service media.

CIRCOM Regional is a Professional Association of Regional Public Service Media in Europe. It currently represents regional public service television stations from 30 European countries. The awards are presented at the CIRCOM Regional Annual Conference, hosted each year by a national network in a regional centre.

The name “CIRCOM” is derived from its French title: Cooperative Internationale de Recherche et d’Action en matière de Communication (International Cooperative for Research and Action in the Field of Communication).
