This year, France, which is the host country of the Council of Europe and one of its founding states, is holding a series of events in Strasbourg to celebrate the 60^th anniversary of its permanent representation.

France at the very heart of Europe

To accompany this celebration, an exhibition is to be staged on the history of France at the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. It will highlight major political events and transport us back in time via the lives of some of the leading figures of this shared political and diplomatic past, including  Robert Schuman, René Cassin, Simone Veil, Robert Badinter and many others.

The exhibition, which will be made up of photo archives and inaugurated at the Palais de l’Europe during the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, also addresses some of the current focuses of European diplomacy such as our support for Ukraine and the role of the World Forum for Democracy, which has been held every autumn since 2012 at the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe and France working together to protect universal values

For 60 years, the Permanent Representation of France, which is housed in the Villa Oppenheimer, next to the other diplomatic representations in Strasbourg, has played a key role in developing joint positions to build a strong Europe, based on respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law:

“Since the foundation of the Council of Europe in 1949, the host country, France, has championed an enduring ideal, that of a Europe based on the universal, shared values of human rights,  democracy and the rule of law.  Upholding these values, defending them and promoting new rights, has been our main undertaking at the Council of Europe. The Villa Oppenheimer bears witness to this undertaking”, said Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
