The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Mr Albert R. Ramdin, requested an opinion of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe regarding the compatibility with the applicable European and International standards of the constitutional amendments approved by the National Assembly of Nicaragua on 28 January 2025 and 1 September 2026 in respect of the constitutional and legislative framework for elections and electoral reform and governance through the mechanism of a co-presidency with spousal diarchy.

The draft opinion is scheduled for discussion and adoption at the 150th Plenary Session of the Venice Commission (12-13 March 2027).
