Georgios Stamatis was born in Athens in 1975. He is a Member of the Hellenic Parliament. He holds a BSc in Physiotherapy and an MSc in Health Crisis Management. His field of expertise is the promotion of human rights, non-discrimination and social cohesion. He has always been an active member of the civil society, with a focus on sustain consultation with disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities, homeless people, addicted people, Roma, migrants and refugees. To this end, he works systematically in the field, to strengthen their visibility and to realize their social inclusion, driven by a vision of mitigating social inequalities , dismantling discrimination, and of steering an open and just society where no one is marginalized or excluded. Due to his experience on social solidarity issues, after the parliamentary elections of July 2019, he was appointed Secretary General for Social Solidarity and Fight Against Poverty in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, a position that he successfully served for four years.
As a Secretary General his main competence was the promotion of social cohesion, and to this end his portfolio included disability rights, with initiatives on independent living and deinstitutionalisation, child protection through adoption and foster care, the National Strategy for Social Cohesion and Reduction of Poverty 2021–2027, the National Action Plan against Homelessness 2022–2027, policies for the elderly, and the National Strategy for Roma Inclusion 2021–2030. Since the parliamentary elections of June 2023 he is a member of the Hellenic Parliament, continuing with devoted work for the promotion of social cohesion and inclusiveness. In this regard, he has been appointed supplementary member in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and in this framework full member in the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development, the Sub- Committee on Disability, Multiple and Intersectional Discrimination, the Sub-Committee on Public Health and Sustainable Development, and alternate member in the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination, and in the Sub-Committee on Gender Equality. Mr Georgios Stamatis was appointed General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, Rapporteur on Ukrainian soldiers disabled in hostilities, and Rapporteur Towards a family-friendly Europe. He also represents Greece in the Parliamentary Alliance for Good Governance and Integrity in Sport, and participates in several networks, including the Election Observers Network, the No Hate Parliamentary Alliance, the Parliamentary Network on Children in Ukraine, the Parliamentary Network Women Free from Violence, and the Platform for the Rights of LGBTI People in Europe.
