What are human rights?
Human rights are about respecting the human being, both as an individual and as a member of the human species and ensuring the dignity of the human being.
In Council of Europe member states human rights are protected by the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (4 November 1950), which in turn was inspired by the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (10 December 1948). The Council of Europe aims to achieve greater unity between countries, including by maintaining and further realising human rights and fundamental freedoms.
