The Council of Europe has recognised the accessibility to persons with disabilities achieved at the Oslo opera by awarding it a prize during the 2014 Accessibility Awards (Trophées de l’Accessibilité) ceremony in Paris on 14 May. The prize was also awarded in recognition of the opera’s consultation of the public at the building design stage.
Organised by an association,Accès Pour Tous, every year since 2010, the Accessibility Awards are intended to spotlight exemplary schemes and to help to improve the autonomy and access opportunities of persons with disabilities.
The 2014 ceremony took place under the patronage of the President of France, François Hollande, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland.
It was in April 2006 that the Council of Europe adopted its Disability Action Plan 2006-2015 comprising 15 action lines, including participation in political, public and cultural life, education, information and communication, employment, accessibility of the built environment and transport.
