The Council of Europe continues to support Ukrainian prosecutors and judges in strengthening their knowledge of European human rights standards. Within the HELP course “Human Rights Protection in Europe: the Interplay between the European Convention on Human Rights and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union”, the Council of Europe project “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine - Phase II” national consultant, Mr Oleksandr Marusiak, provided expertise on EU institutions and the application of EU law.

The webinar also covered the main principles, sources and practical application of EU law, including the EU Treaties, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and other key legal instruments. During the discussion, participants showed particular interest in the EU acquis and accession process, asking questions about the negotiation clusters and the main challenges Ukraine faces on its path towards EU membership.

The webinar was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine – Phase II”, which forms part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery, and Reconstruction” for 2023–2026 together with the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the Prosecutor`s Training Center and Project “HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine including during wartime”, Phase II.
