Media regulators of Ukraine and Latvia exchanged best practices in implementing strategies and media monitoring

On 12 December 2023, an online meeting with representatives of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine and the National Electronic Mass Media Council of Latvia took place.

The event was held at the request of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, which is one of the main beneficiaries of the Council of Europe Project “Safeguarding Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Media in Ukraine”, which is implemented in the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction” for the period of 2023-2026.

The meeting was opened by Valentyn KOVAL, First Deputy Chair, National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine.  From the Latvian side, the guest speaker was Aurēlija Ieva DRUVIETE, Vice-Chair of the National Electronic Mass Media Council of Latvia.

During the event, Dmytro KARDASH, Head of the Strategic Planning, International Interaction and Communications Department, National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, presented the recently approved Action Strategy of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine 2024-2026  and told about further plans of the Ukrainian regulator for the approval of the Action Plan. For her part, Aurēlija Ieva DRUVIETE spoke about the work of the Latvian regulator, its experience in developing and implementing the Strategy, and online media monitoring.

The participants also had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the developments in the direction of combating hate speech in the media and the work of the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Moldova, which were shared by Mirela CHIRIAC, Project Officer of the EU/CoE project  “Combating discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes in the Republic of Moldova”.

The event was attended by around 50 participants.
